HAMPTON, Va. March 14, 2022 — Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey was recognized as a 2022 UNCF M.A.S.K.E.D. Award Honoree by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Saturday March 12, at the 2022 UNCF MayorsMasked Ball – Hampton Roads at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

As a staunch advocate for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, I am proud of the  leadership that this organization has provided the HBCU community over the past decades. It is a pleasure to be honored by you,” said Dr. Harvey. “Over the years, the work of advocating for HBCUs has become more and more challenging. Now more than ever, we need to support our own institutions and let our voices be heard. We are living in a time when too many people who are not affiliated with nor have ever attended or worked at an HBCU are trying to tell our stories. Award-winning journalist Tony Brown once told me that if we do not tell our own stories, then it becomes HIS-story and not history.  All of us in this room need to commit ourselves to telling the HBCU story because we cannot allow others to be the experts on who and what we are as the HBCU community.

“Our agenda needs to be a collaborative one. All of the various organizations that represent HBCUs need to work together in support of the wonderful work that we continue to do. This is one of the reasons that organizations such as the UNCF are important. They represent our institutions and give us an opportunity to communicate with one another and to work together to make HBCUs and all of higher education better.”

M.A.S.K.E.D. is an acronym for Mankind Assisting Students to Kindle Educational Dreams. The award was created by national visual artist Brenda Singletary. The piece is filled with passion, hope, and opportunity, and it reflects the UNCF ideal and mission that "A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in®.” The award is bestowed upon those who have consistently demonstrated compassion and have served as a beacon of hope to keep doorways of opportunity open for deserving students and the greater community.

The event was chaired by AAU Ambassador Marcellus Boo” Williams and Primis Bank Area Manager, Sonya Daniels. The Hampton Roads MayorsMasked Ball 2021 enabled UNCF Virginia to provide more than $1.3 M in scholarships in the 2020-2021 academic year to deserving Virginia students.

The UNCF MayorsMasked Ball is one of the organizations signature fundraising galas and premier social events of the year. Hosted by a diverse group of corporate sponsors and individuals, it involves celebrities, dignitaries and more than 500 business, civic and education leaders, alumni and others who support UNCFs mission of investing in Americas future by getting students to and through college.
