HAMPTON, Va. (August 5, 2021) – Hampton University’s Director of the HU Online program, Dr. Jarris Louis Taylor, Jr., participated in a virtual panel discussion with The Chronicle of Higher Education, a newspaper and website that presents news, information, and jobs for college and university faculty and student professionals.
“Throughout these very unprecedented times, we have become very adaptable in multiple spaces within this institution. It is important we have these types of discussions about the new normal of virtual learning,” said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey. “We are proud to see Dr. Taylor as our new Director of our Hampton U Online Program. We look forward to seeing the success of this program through his leadership.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, institutions who relied exclusively on in person learning quickly built capacities to offer classes online and other institutions that already had capabilities expanded them. Now that some campuses have returned back to normal this fall, what do these institutions do with their new-found capabilities as they continue to explore the potential of digital classroom and how to operate them successfully?
Dr. Jarris Taylor is the Director of Hampton University Online as well as the Director of the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute. “While Hampton University is an HBCU, we look at Hampton U Online as a global program, as we attract, recruit, educate, retain and most importantly, graduate students. We transitioned to virtual instruction in March of 2020. As the Director of the WRHLI, I had two graduating classes that were not here on our main campus. As I wear my Hampton University Director of Online hat, it is that engagement, that outreach to our current student body population that is important. How can we satisfy students’ academic needs and still support them with a holistic view? We had to adapt to be flexible to their needs.”
