03/04/2017 - #163
HAMPTON, Va – Hampton University urges its students to vote for the university in the 2017 Home Depot: Retool Your School campus improvement program. The program has increased its winnings to $360,000 for nine accredited HBCUs to provide sustainable renovations on their campuses.
In 2015 HU won a $10,000 grant to install energy efficient windows in McGrew Towers and in 2010 the University won a $10,000 grant that was used to renovate the iron gating and new landscaping around Emancipation Oak. This year, Hampton hopes to use the grant money to:
·      Install additional cell phone charging stations across campus
·      Build a playground for the Child Development Center
·      Install custom-designed benches/picnic tables across campus.

In its eighth year, the Retool Your School program was initiated to provide support for campus improvement projects to the nation’s HBCUs. Since the program’s inception in 2010, over one million dollars in grant money has been awarded. Schools are categorized into one of three clusters depending on the student population. This year’s program is offering one $50,000, one $40,000 and one $30,000 grant to three schools in each cluster. Also for the first time this year, the non-winning qualified schools who submit their applications and receive a minimum of 100 votes, will receive a $1,000 Home Depot gift card.
