HAMPTON, Va. (Nov.11, 2019) — Mr. Pirate, Jamil Gambari and Miss Hampton University, Carmen Jackson, are contestants in Ebony’s HBCU Campus Kings and Queens Contest. Voting began today and ends at midnight, December 31, 2019.

The EBONY HBCU Campus Queens franchise is one of the longest running editorial features in America’s preeminent magazine focusing on the African-American experience. The participants embody the determination, inner beauty and positive impact that EBONY admires in our next generation. The young women who participate in the HBCU Campus Queens Program are poised to affect great social change within our collegiate, civic, national and global communities. This year, EBONY is proud to introduce the inaugural class of EBONY HBCU Campus Kings. These young men demonstrate the ability to inspire, lead and give back to their communities.

“Mr. Gambari and Miss Jackson epitomize everything that makes Hampton University THE Standard of Excellence,” said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. “These two bright, witty, outgoing and high character individuals represent the leaders that we build at this world-class institution! Vote now, and vote often!”

Historically Black Colleges and Universities were founded to promote Black excellence and brilliance, and each reigning king and queen was elected by their peers and/or school officials to represent those standards for their institution of higher learning.

“I am beyond blessed and truly honored to have earned the title of 2019-2020 Miss Hampton University,” said Jackson. “There are still no words to describe the bliss I feel. Holding such an esteemed role on campus comes with great responsibility. I am eager to implement my platform across campus and the Hampton Roads area.”

“Being Mr. Pirate means everything to me,” said Gambari. “It offers me the platform to represent what young black men have to offer. This is an amazing opportunity to highlight what we could achieve as young men if we removed the barriers we impose on ourselves, ultimately allowing everything we're blessed with to be displayed to motivate others to shine as well.”
