The Hampton University WRHLI Holds 22nd Annual High School Leadership Summit
08/01/2019 - #17
HAMPTON, Va. (August 1, 2019) – The Hampton University William R. Harvey Leadership Institute (WRHLI) hosted the 22nd Annual High School Leadership Summit, July 7 – 13, 2019, designed for rising high school juniors and seniors to learn skills in order to establish a plan for success after graduation.

“With any objective analysis, Hampton University will demonstrate that we are one of the best modest-size universities in the entire country. In choosing Hampton and in choosing the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute, you really are getting the best leadership training there is,” Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey.

The WRHLI High School Leadership Summit gives students the opportunity to begin thinking about their next steps following graduation. Participants involved in the Summit learned how to better their critical thinking, decision-making skills, as well as teamwork ability and basic leadership principles. Dr. Jarris Taylor, Director of the WRHLI, served as the spearhead of the Summit, which included appearances by many notable guest speakers who serve in active roles in the Hampton Roads Community.

“What really impressed me the most from this group of future leaders is that 19 applied for early admission and thus far received $85K in scholarships. This is one less burden they will have to deal with entering their senior year, as they have an institution of higher learning to call home,” said Dr. Jarris Taylor, Jr., Director of the WRHLI. “Last year, we had 12 apply for early admission and I am aware of five attending ‘Our Home By The Sea’ and three have submitted applications to apply for the incoming cohort at the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute. Once again, the A-listers of professionals did a fantastic job telling their entrepreneurial life stories and sharing invaluable wisdom and I cannot thank them enough.”

The WRHLI was founded in 2000, a vision of Dr. William R. Harvey, Hampton University’s President, with the purpose of developing leaders who make a positive difference in society, whatever chosen profession. Dr. Harvey envisioned a program, “emphasizing integrity, honesty, respect for others, decency, dignity and responsibility.” The objective is achieved through the use of Dr. Harvey’s Ten Step Leadership Model: Vision, Work Ethic, Academic Excellence, Team Building, Innovation, Courage, Management, Fairness, Fiscal Conservation, and Results.

This year’s Summit theme focused on Entrepreneurial Leadership centering on ‘The Leader Within.’ The week-long, residential program provided students with the opportunity to participate in several exciting and challenging workshops. Students representing 17 states and the District of Columbia had the opportunity to display their innovative and entrepreneur skills as a team in front of their parents during the Summit’s very own version of Shark Tank.

“For the first time we incorporated a service-learning project and went to Buckroe Beach and did some beautification by picking up trash at the park, surrounding streets, boardwalk and the beach. We also provided each student a letter to verify their community service hours to take back to their high schools for their records. This was the first time many had ever cleaned a beach and their essays were impactful as they were given an assignment to write about the importance of community service and reflect on their experience,” said Dr. Taylor. “And of course, our Summit would not have been complete without the namesake, our 12th President, Dr. William R. Harvey, who provided inspirational remarks to the students, parents and guests during our Closing Brunch Ceremony that had in excess of 200 people. Needless to say, a good time was had by all and we are gearing up for our 23rd Annual High School Leadership Summit.”
