HAMPTON, Va. (January 7, 2020) – The Hampton University band, ‘The Marching Force,’ is receiving a proclamation of praise and celebration from the City of Hampton, Wednesday, January 8 during the City Council Meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m. This proclamation is to recognize the band’s service to the City of Hampton based on their representation of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Rome New Year’s Day Parade.
“Thank you to the City of Hampton and Mayor Donnie Tuck for this proclamation which recognizes The Hampton University Marching Force, an elite group of talented musicians and performers. The Marching Force continues to be an ambassador for Hampton University and the City of Hampton, both domestically and abroad. We could not be more proud of the accomplishments of one of the best marching bands in the nation, led by Dr. Thomas L. Jones,” said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey.
Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck will read the actual proclamation which speaks on The Marching Force being a “grand example of the positive impact of music on student engagement and success,” and much more. They will also show a short promo video of the band’s experience in Rome.
"We are beyond honored and humbled to be recognized by the City of Hampton as a result of the dedication and hard work of our students. They truly embody the Hampton University values and are reflections of Dr. Harvey's visionary leadership. We have gone from a band of 78 members to over 200 members in less than two years, and this is no doubt due to the overwhelming support we have received by the Hampton University and Hampton, Virginia communities," said Dr. Thomas L. Jones, Hampton University Director of Bands.
The Marching Force will also be performing in the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®, representing the state of Virginia. Hampton will join the Parade to the call of “Let’s Have a Parade,” the iconic phrase that has signaled the start of every Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade since 1924.
