HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 18, 2020) — Nine Hamptonians have been selected to participate in Position Sport’s inaugural HBCU Diversity Recognition Equality Activism Mentorship (DREAM) Program for the Fall of 2020. For 10 weeks 21 students from various HBCUs, who are interested in a career in sports management and marketing, will be attending a virtual internship. The goal of the internship is to review all of the different areas of the sports industry, as well as assist with real world career advice to set the students up for success with networking, resume building and their own personal social media platforms.

“We are extremely proud of all of our students and alumni for their acceptance into the inaugural DREAM Mentorship program with Position Sports. This is the type of success that Hamptonians gain through hard work, perseverance, and dedication. Position Sports is a leading sports marketing firm based in Phoenix, AZ that works with Nike, Red Bull, Jordan Brand, Major League Baseball, Little League International, the Basketball Hall of Fame and USA Basketball, among others. Position Sports specializes in Sports Integration Strategy, Event Operations, Activation Development, Media Relations and Digital Engagement.

“With much of the country’s education shifting to online learning, at least to start this upcoming semester, we thought this would be a great opportunity to help guide future sports professionals through our company platform,” said Natalie Blair, Sports Marketing Manager of Position Sports. “We felt that it was important to cultivate new partnerships with our nations HBCUs and to give those students greater access to more opportunities in the sporting industry.”

Position Sports will host weekly Zoom chats with the interns to educate them on various areas (Event Management, Social Media, Public Relations, Sponsorships, etc.) plus some real world tips on resumes, personal social accounts, networking opportunities and interview techniques.
Each week, a special guest speaker on those specific topics will join the team.

Each student will also be paired with a member of the Position Sports team as an advisor over the next couple of months, based on the student’s area of interest.  The mentors will share examples of prior and current work with clients and assist the students with identifying and perfecting key skills for their job path. Position Sports hopes to then select a few of the top students to gain in-person experience at one of their major events (COVID-permitting) at the end of the semester or in the Spring of 2021.

Winston Salem State University, Howard University, Delaware State University and Johnson C. Smith University also have students participating in the program.
