HAMPTON, Va. (October 25, 2018) - On Friday, September 29, 2018, Michael Adams Jr. was crowned Mr. Pirate during Hampton University’s annual Mr. Pirate Pageant for the 2018-2019 academic school year. His platform, Knowledge Igniting National Gentlemen Success, or K.I.N.G.S, is an initiative to teach young men to be Kings through community service outreach and public speaking skills.
“This is a great achievement for Mr. Adams, receiving the title of Mr. Pirate. His commitment to being a leader, to succeeding in life, is what a true Hamptonian gentleman should be,” said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey.
Who is Michael Adams?
Michael Adams is a senior, psychology major, from Atlanta, GA. His extra-curricular activities include, Mr. Pirate, Senior Class President, member of the Gamma Iota Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Student Senate, Student Administration Team, Student Board Team, Dean’s Fellow, and the Greer Dawson Wilson Student Leadership Program.
What inspired you to run for Mr. Pirate?
I started thinking about the pageant this past summer. Last year’s Mr. Pirate, Kris Bates, reached out to me and he suggested I run. Once I understood what it would actually mean to be Mr. Pirate, I just knew at that point, I would do whatever it took to take on this title.
How do you plan to manage two very important roles serving as Senior Class President and Mr. Pirate?
It may be a lot, but I feel like the common denominator for both is being an advocate for change and being a leader. Yes, these are two separate roles, but they fit so well together. Being senior class president, I am looked at as the leader for my class, QTX. Being Mr. Pirate, I’ll be the leader of a sub group of men on campus, leading them towards the next level. I’m so passionate about both.
What was pageant day like for you?
I was nervous, but luckily I played sports in high school, which helped me with the competitive aspect of the pageant. Even though it was five of us competing against each other, we are all like brothers. There was a lot of support between the five of us. We even prayed together. There was this feeling that whoever would win, we agreed that each contestant was fit for the role, but when they called my name, it was a surreal experience. It’s something that helped me grow as a person.
Fun Facts about Mr. Pirate:
I like watching old stand-up comedy on YouTube. I watch old Kevin Hart, Chris Rock, and Chris Tucker. I also like watching videos about famous artists from my hometown. One group that’s really big right now is The Migos and they are from Atlanta, GA. I remember watching videos of them when no one knew who they were. They came to my high school to perform as well. I love seeing the elevation of people. There is a hidden beauty in the process of hard work. In my spare time, I also like to cook. I enjoy making pasta and baking.
“I really appreciate the opportunity to be Mr. Pirate. My main thing is to elevate Mr. Pirate to a whole new level in every single aspect. That was one of my main reasons for wanting to take on this position. I’m dedicated to it and I’m excited for the future to see what this position will grow to become in the next five years or so. I want to use my platform to make a change on this campus and to make a change in the world,” said Adams.
