Hampton University Student-Athletes Reflect on 2019 Big South Leadership Conference
07/17/2019 - #10

HAMPTON, Va. (July 17, 2019) – Three Hampton University student-athletes recently participated in the Big South Conference Leadership Conference held in Black Mountain, N.C.

Football senior Desmond Sturdivant, men's basketball senior Trey Carver and women's track and field senior Jaelan Leonard represented Hampton at the event held at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly.  While there, they heard from industry leaders on various leadership topics.

The student-athletes broke into small groups for projects throughout the weekend ranging from skits, to explaining leadership through designing with play-doh, to competitions and more.  All of those were aimed to show the measure of their influence on campus, connecting personal relationships and being comfortable in their own skin.

Representatives from College Sports Associates, working with the Big South Conference on updating the Strategic Plan, spoke with the group soliciting feedback on how the conference works and looking for ways of improvement.

Sturdivant picked up pointers on leadership to carry into his final season on the football field along with his role of being the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).  "The biggest thing I really took away from the entire retreat is my role off the field, with me being President of SAAC this year, is that I have to show a standard of leadership that not only begins with my skills as a leader but also begins with my character as a leader," the native of Greensboro, N.C. said.

Guest speakers throughout the weekend gave the attendees many good quotes and ideas on how to improve on their leadership skills back on campus.   Carver, from Elizabeth City, found one about self-worth that stuck with him.  "One quote that will stick with me was by one of our speakers, Timothy Alexander. He said that 'if you never believe in yourself, how can you expect anyone else to? You were born to succeed, all you have to do is go get it, '" said the senior.

Leonard, a Virginia Beach native, picked up some components on how to be a better leader.  "One thing I took away from this retreat to use was learning the key components on how to be a leader," she said.  "I want to be able to reach out to not only just my teammates but to whomever to show them that they can be a leader in their own way."
