HAMPTON, Va. (May 16, 2018) — The Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications student Kyla Wright has been awarded the Betty Endicott Scholarship worth $5,000 to be used towards her Hampton University education.

The Betty Endicott Scholarship is given out annually from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences-National Capital Chesapeake Bay (NATAS-NCCB) Chapter to full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are studying communications and/or broadcast journalism. The scholarship is named after Betty Endicott, the first female news director in Washington, D.C.

Wright will be a senior in the fall and is majoring in Journalism with a Sociology minor. She is a Rhoden Fellow and produces content for ESPN’s “The Undefeated;” produces a weekly podcast about race, sports and culture; has earned honors on the Dean’s List in all semesters; maintains a 3.81 GPA; and has her own personal blog and show on YouTube.

“My mom and I are going to attend the celebration for the award at the end of June and I am so excited,” Wright said. “I’m going to use the scholarship for my last year, my senior year, and I am honored to receive such a prestigious award to help further my education and help me gain the knowledge to continue my career in the Journalism field.”

Wright stood out amongst other applicants due to her essay that focused on racial bias in television news, her Journalism endeavors, and a highly complimentary letter of recommendation from ESPN.

DàVida Plummer, Dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, contributes part of Wright’s success to the professors in the college who have been able to share their knowledge and work with Wright over the years. “All of the professors within the school of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications who have had an opportunity to work with Kyla, sing her praises and expect nothing shy of greatness from her,” Plummer said. “And she has proven them all right.”
