09/18/2019 - #51

HAMPTON, Va. (September 18, 2019) – The Hampton University School of Science is hosting a free one-day Pre-Med Conference on Friday, September 20, starting at 7:30 a.m, and ending at 12:30 p.m. The event will be held on Hampton University’s campus, located at 200 William R. Harvey Way, Hampton, in the Student Center, and the theme is “Increasing Diversity in Healthcare.”

“Hampton University would like to invite students and professionals in the medical community to this one-day Pre-Med Conference. As always, we are dedicated to the promotion of learning, and Hampton continues to provide students with many different facets of the educational experience,” said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey.

Dr. Cedric Bright, 2011-2012 National Medical Association President, and current Associate Dean for Admissions for The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, will serve as the Keynote Speaker for the Conference. Dr. Bright is a physician and patient advocate. He has spoken about health disparities before the Congressional Black Caucus; was a medical ambassador to Ghana; and has served as a mentor for the Student National Medical Association.

“This conference will be far different than others held in the past. While the audience will certainly be students, we are also interested in area medical professionals and physician alumni of the University attending,” said Dr. Calvin Lowe, Dean of the Hampton University School of Science. “The goal of this conference is to inform and inspire undergraduate and graduate students to pursue careers in medicine.  In addition, this event serves as a means for our newly established Physician Alumni Affinity Group to reconnect with their alma mater and with current Pre-Med students.”

Conference attendees will learn about the Business of Medicine, alternative occupations for physicians and more. This is a free event and no registration is required.

“We are looking for more than 200 people to come to this event…or more! And for everyone who attends, there will be something that can be used. From the sessions on mastering the MCATs to the sessions on alternative occupations for physicians, to the session on the business of medicine, this is sure to be an exciting time for all,” said Dr. White.

As noted by Dr. Lowe, there is a shortage of minority physicians in the U.S. He hopes that this conference will motivate students to work hard, continue in their academic careers, in order to reduce the disparity of healthcare providers. “Our students are looking for guidance, knowledge and insights as they press toward med-school. The speakers planned will convey insights that will help take our students forward in their medical education and preparation process. They need insight and encouragement to make their dreams a reality,” added Dr. Lowe.
