HAMPTON, Va. (June 20, 2018) — Hampton University kicked off its Pre-College/Summer Bridge Program on Friday, June 15, 2018. Families from various parts of the country traveled to Virginia to drop their teen off for what will be the jump-start of their college career.
The Pre-College/Summer Bridge Program is a five-week, academic enrichment, residential program. Students will have the opportunity to grow personally and professionally, while advancing their academic and leadership skills. Students will gain exposure to the full range of resources and facilities that are made available to them by the university.
Upon arrival, students began their day with registration in the student center ballroom, followed by an introduction ceremony held in Ogden Hall. During this ceremony, students were introduced to Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey, and a number of administrators on campus, while learning the history of Hampton University as it upholds THE standard of excellence.
“It is a true blessing to have been able to serve as President of this university for 40 years,” said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. “Understand that character plays an important role in you all being successful in obtaining a fine education from this university. We believe character is the truest foundation of any life well-lived and any successful career.”
Many students were filled with excitement, as they graced the campus, and took in the many new and unfamiliar attractions. Some were eager to start their academic career and others were anxious to network with students from many different parts of the country.
“I chose to join this Pre-College program because Hampton is an HBCU and it’s in Virginia. This school is really nice and it has a great community too,” said Simone Simmons from Cleveland, Ohio. “I would like to make friends and have a better knowledge of the nursing program to see if this is really what I want to do with my life. This will be a good start for me.”
“This is my first year as Director of the Pre-College Program,” said Patra Johnson, Director of the Pre-College Program and Freshman Studies. “I am so excited and the students are so excited and full of enthusiasm. I enjoy preparing these young minds for the college experience.”
The Pre-College/Summer Bridge Program will conclude on July 20, 2018. The program's finale includes the Annual Pre-College Banquet where professors have the opportunity to recognize students who have improved or achieved outstanding academics for the duration of the program. Every year the program invites a keynote speaker who addresses a topic that is timely and extremely educational for the students. The message usually centers itself on the Pre-College/Summer Bridge Program's motto: "Good, better, best; never let it rest; until your good is better; and your better is best.”
