HAMPTON, Va. (June 17, 2019) — Hampton University kicked off its Pre-College/Summer Bridge Program on Friday, June 14, 2019. Families from various parts of the country traveled to Hampton to drop their teen off for what will be the jump-start of their college career.
“It is a true blessing to have been able to serve as President of this university for 41 years and this academic year, I will be entering into my 42nd year,” said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. “Understand that character plays an important role in you all being successful in obtaining a fine education from this university. We believe character is the truest foundation of any life well-lived and any successful career. Our values are honesty, truth, decency, integrity, and respect for oneself, others, and this university.”
The Pre-College/Summer Bridge Program is a five-week, academic enrichment, residential program. Students will have the opportunity to grow personally and professionally, while advancing their academic and leadership skills. Students will gain exposure to the full range of resources and facilities that are made available to them by the university.
Upon arrival, students began their day with registration in the student center ballroom, followed by an introduction ceremony held in Ogden Hall. During this ceremony, students were introduced to Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey, and a number of administrators on campus, while learning the history of Hampton University as it upholds THE Standard of Excellence.
Many students were filled with excitement, as they graced the campus, and took in the many new and unfamiliar attractions. Some were eager to start their academic career and others were anxious to network with students from many different parts of the country.
“I grew up around a lot of Hampton alumni and seeing how they have come up through life was inspiring. Almost every Alum I know owns their own business and they are doing great things in life,” said Tyrone Mayer, incoming freshman from Maryland, whose mother, father, grandmother and several other family members are all Hampton alumni. “I would like to continue that. It’s clear that coming to Hampton teaches you how to be your own boss and how to manage your money. I would love to develop those skills to carry on throughout life.”
The Pre-College/Summer Bridge Program will conclude on July 20, 2019. The program's finale includes the Annual Pre-College Banquet where professors have the opportunity to recognize students who have improved or achieved outstanding academics for the duration of the program.
