12/05/2016 - #111

Hampton, VA – Hampton University Chaplain Rev. Debra L. Haggins was honored with delivering the invocation at the 2016 National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on a chilly night in Washington, D.C. at President’s Park. The full event aired on The Hallmark Channel on Monday, December 5th at 7 p.m. ET.

Haggins passionately prayed over our nations leaders, our service men and women and the country as a whole saying, “We celebrate a blessed hope that keeps inspiring us to give love that moves mountains, that knows no limits or boundaries and calls us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

Haggins has been invited to the White House before, but this was her first time praying at the National Christmas Tree Lighting.

She continued her prayer saying, “Tonight we celebrate as a nation the blessings of HOPE: A precious hope that has the glorious audacity to show up and bring joy to the world.”

This event also marked the final time President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle lit the tree.

The event was hosted by actress Eva Longoria and included live performances from singers Kelly Clarkson, Marc Anthony, Chance the Rapper, Yolanda Adams, The Lumineers, Garth Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood.

The ceremony has been held annually since President Calvin Coolidge began it in 1923.
