HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 12, 2017) — Hampton University’s sesquicentennial and 40th anniversary of President Dr. William R. Harvey celebration continues with the 75th Annual Opening Convocation on Sunday, Sept. 24. Alumnus Calvin L. Butts, Jr., healthcare and pharmaceutical strategist and co-founder of #HamptonNation will present the keynote address at in Ogden Hall. The event will begin at 10:45 a.m.
Drs. Karen Ward and Sylvia Rose will also be recognized as the 2016-17 E. L. Hamm, Sr. Award recipients. Rose serves as assistant dean in the School of Business. Ward serves as the chair of the Fine and Performing Arts department in the School of Liberal Arts and Education. The E. L. Hamm, Sr. Award recognizes those faculty who consistently attain teaching excellence by going above and beyond the classroom and inspiring their students to have a passion for learning and a commitment to excellence.
“How marvelous to hear words of wisdom from a Hampton University alumnus who lives out THE Standard of Excellence in all he does and all he gives back to the University,” said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. “I am looking forward to hearing what he will share with us at our Diamond Anniversary Opening Convocation.”

His years of working with top pharmaceutical companies to working with some of the best in class digital agencies has provided Butts with a unique perspective that allows him to harmoniously blend these two industries. The end result has been some of the most highly recognized, award-winning deliverables in the market today. Butts is also PharmaVoice 100 winner (100 most inspiring people in pharmaceutical industry) as well as New Jersey 40 under 40.
As an active Hampton alumni, Butts has served as a National Hampton Alumni Association Board Member and remains active at local and regional levels. Also, he is a co-founder of the Hampton University Young Alumni Council.
Hampton Nation is his latest vision for the University. He along with his classmate, Dr. Michael Greene, founded and funded the launch of a national athletic campaign to help raise money and awareness for Hampton University Athletics. #HamptonNation
Butts earned a bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from Hampton University, and completed his Executive Master of Business Administration from Temple University.
