Hampton University Alumni Honored at Speech-Language Hearing Convention

Hampton, Va. -  Several alumni of the Hampton University Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders received awards at the 2015 America Speech- Language Hearing Association Convention Awards Ceremony Nov. 13 in Denver, Colorado. 

“Hampton University has a really rich history in the field of speech and hearing,” said Dr. Pollie S. Murphy, Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs. “The Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Hampton is oldest degree granting program in speech and hearing at a HBCU. We have produced more African American speech pathologists than any other program in the country.”

Dr. Noma B. Anderson ‘71 was a recipient of the 2015 Honors of the Association, the highest honor bestowed by the ASHA. The award recognizes members for their distinguished contribution to the discipline of communication sciences and disorders. Honor recipients are well-known throughout the nation and the world for a lifetime of innovation clinical practice, insightful and rigorous research, creative administration, effective legislative activity, outstanding teaching, or other distinguished professional contributions. Anderson, a former HU faculty member, is currently the dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences at the UT Health Science Center in Memphis.  

Dr. Dorian Lee-Wilkerson '77 and Dr. Donna R. Brooks ’78 were recipients of the 2015 Fellowship of the Association award. Fellowship in the American Speech-Language Hearing Association is one of the highest honors the organization bestows. Recipients have made contributions to the field through clinical service, clinical education, research and published works; administrative service; service to the ASHA; or service to and leadership in other speech- language pathology organizations. Lee-Wilkerson is presently the chair of the HU Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Hampton. Brooks is currently the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies and Associate Professor at Armstrong State University.
