The Sixth Annual HBCU Awards Ceremony was held on July 15, 2016 at the University of the District of Columbia. Hampton University won two awards at this years’ ceremony.
The Hampton University Players & Company won the “Best Fine Arts Program” award and “Alumnus of the Year,” went to Hampton University 1998 graduate Sashi Brown, executive VP of football operations for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.
HU was also a finalist in three other categories. The University’s women’s track team was a finalist for “Female Team of the Year.” Professor Idonia Barrett was also a finalist in the category of “Female Faculty Member of the Year,” and The Hampton Script was a finalist in the “Best Student Publication” category.
Finalists were selected from more than 600 submissions from colleges and individuals around the country, based upon media exposure and impact on institutional progress made during the 2015-16 academic year. Winners were selected by a panel of previous HBCU Award winners, presidents and chancellors, media members which cover HBCUs, alumni, and students
