HAMPTON, VA  – Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications (SHSJC) today announced that Matthew Winkler, who co-founded Bloomberg News with Michael Bloomberg in 1990 and built the company’s news operation into a global power with 2,400 editors and reporters and 150 bureaus around the world, will speak at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 9, in the Scripps Howard School’s Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

Winkler is editor-in-chief emeritus of Bloomberg News, a premier, global news service and division of financial information company Bloomberg L.P.  Winkler led the company’s development of print and broadcast media outlets across North and South America, Europe and Asia.  As a result of his leadership, Bloomberg News produces more than 5,000 stories daily about the economy, companies, governments, financial and commodity markets and more. Bloomberg News also provides content to Bloomberg Businessweek, Bloomberg Markets magazines, Bloomberg Television and Radio and Bloomberg.com.

During Winkler’s 25-year tenure with Bloomberg News, the news service received more than 800 awards. These include the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism, several Pulitzer finalists, Roy W. Howard for Public Service, Society of Professional Journalists (Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York chapters), the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights Journalism, George Polk, Gerald Loeb, Overseas Press Club, American Business Editors and Writers, and National Magazine Award for General Excellence.

Winkler, who became a Bloomberg L.P. board member in 2006 and writes about markets for Bloomberg View, has garnered numerous awards and accolades for his accomplishments in the world of journalism and business.  In 2012, he was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism and in 2007, the Gerald Loeb Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for “exceptional career achievements in business, financial and economic news writing,” among many other prestigious awards throughout his career.
