HU School of Engineering and Technology Alumni Earn Doctorates
12/12/2016 - #118

Hampton, Va. -- The Hampton University community celebrates the accomplishments of May 2011 graduates Rhonda Jack, for successfully defending her thesis and earning a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), and Courtney Mitchell for earning her PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Vanderbilt University.

According to The National Science Foundation, the United States produces four to five black female doctorates in Chemical Engineering annually. Jack and Mitchell’s momentous accomplishment means the HU School of Engineering and Technology (SET) is now the baccalaureate origin of two black female doctorates. Their success gives SET dean, Dr. Joyce Sharazi, the department, and the Hampton community additional reason to walk Hampton’s campus with pride.

The scholar's success stems back to their diligence in the classroom and Hampton’s rigorous curriculum. The department of Engineering at Hampton prepares their students for a successful future by stressing fundamentals, research opportunities, internships, presentation skills and conferences.

“We really prepare our students and put their belly to the fire.”, Dr. Adeyiga, a professor of Engineering at Hampton stated.  “They were both incredible students.  Extremely diligent.  A doctorate is reserved for the real top notch students like them.”

Throughout their tenure at HU, Jack and Mitchell flexed their intelligence, remained diligent, and persevered through Hampton’s curriculum while being active in their school community.

Both were a part of notable organizations including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE), the SWE (Society of Women Engineers) , and the NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers).

Hampton prides itself on being “The Standard of Excellence”. Both Jack and Mitchell continue the legacy of that standard set centuries ago.

Congratulations to Rhonda Jack and Courtney Mitchell on both of your accomplishments.  Hampton University honors you!
