Hampton, Va. - Hampton Players & Company presents "Crowns: The Gospel Musical," in the Little Theatre of Armstrong Hall on the campus of Hampton University on Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.
Written by Regina Taylor, “Crowns” tells the story of Yolanda a rebellious young African American girl from Brooklyn who is sent to live with her grandmother, Mother Shaw after the death of Yolanda’s brother. Mother Shaw and her circle of churchwomen attempt to help Yolanda deal with her grief and introduce her into her new supportive community by connecting her experiences to the stories of her ancestors, her history and her people. Lessons of love and loss are taught through rituals of song, dance and the most memorable, “the hat queen rules” of etiquette and proper hat wearing.
The cast of “Crowns” features Eric Perry, Ashanti Branch, Mariah Taliaferro, Allante Lynn, Jasmine Anthony, Jullian Jones, and Lauren Johnson.
The Hampton Players and Company is a professionally run performing ensemble. The performers are not limited to the University stage, but have appeared on stages throughout the United States.
