Hampton, Va. – The Hampton University Players and Company proudly presents the acclaimed musical “Dreamgirls” by Henry Krieger. This dazzling musical production will be held March 24-27 and March 31-April 3, with Thursday – Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for senior citizens, children and students, and free admission for HU students.
“Dreamgirls” follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, who get their break at an amateur competition and begin singing backup vocals for James “Thunder” Early. However, things begin to spin out of control when their agent, Curtis Taylor, Jr., makes Deena and not Effie, the star of what will become known as “The Dreams.” Nominated for thirteen Tony Awards and the winner of six, “Dreamgirls” is based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and others.
This musical production features some of Broadway’s most memorable songs, including “One Night Only,” “Dreamgirls,” “I Am Changing,” “Steppin to the Badside,” “Fake Your Way To The Top,” “Hard To Say Goodbye,” and most notably “And I’m Telling You,” performed by Jennifer Holiday in the play and Jennifer Hudson in the film adaptation.
Dr. Karen T. Ward, chair of the HU Department of Fine and Performing Arts, will direct “Dreamgirls.” Ward has produced more than 70 stage presentations on both the professional and college levels.
Bresean Jenkins will serve as costume designer and C. Perry Otto will head scenic and light design. Choreography produced by Faye Walker and Darryl Dwayne Walker, with Jerry Bracey serving as conductor and Courtney Beard serving as vocal director for the musical production.
