HU Names New Band Director
08/18/2015 - #10
Directing the HU bands is a family tradition for Smart. He is the son of former Director of University Bands Barney E. Smart, who led the band for 14 years before passing away in 2004.
"It' s an honor to come back and to carry on the legacy that my father started," said Smart. "However I want to put my own stamp on this organization. I want to use the teaching tools from my father and other directors that I've learned from."
Smart, an 1999 alumnus of HU, returns to his "Home By the Sea" after serving as the Band Director at George Washington Carver Senior High School in Montgomery, Alabama from 2011-15. Prior to that Smart served as the Band Director at Hampton High School in Hampton, Va. from 2006-09 and Assistant Band Director at Delaware State University from 2002-2005. While in undergrad Smart was a member of the Marching Force, where he was the assistant and head drum major.
"I would like to welcome Mr. Smart back to Hampton University," said Dr. Shelia Maye, Music Department Chairperson. "Mr. Smarts' talents and skills will continue the excellence, showmanship and Hampton tradition that our band is known for."
Smart said he will use the tools from his prior experiences to help make the bands the best they can be.
"My goal is to uphold the tradition, the pride and increase the size of the band," said Smart. "I want the Force to be aggressive and entertaining this year. I will educate our students and develop them into strong professionals.
