Hampton, Va. - The Hampton University Musical Arts Society has announced its 2012-2013 season featuring the Virginia Symphony, Handel’s “Messiah” Sing-a-Long, Robert Sims and Cyrus Chestnut. All performances will be held in HU’s historic Ogden Hall.
Virginia Symphony, Nov. 15, 8 p.m.

The 92 year-old Virginia Symphony Orchestra is Southeastern Virginia's pre-eminent professional symphony orchestra. It is ranked in the top 10 percent of professional orchestras nationwide and performs Classics, Pops and Family concert series in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Williamsburg and now Hampton! The symphony reaches more than 200,000 concertgoers every year.

Celebrate the season with a "Sing-A-Long" to George Frederic Handel's holiday classic. This timeless classic has become a traditional event in the Hampton Roads community. HU's Department of Music, University Choirs and Orchestra invite audiences to join along with featured guest soloist.

Robert Sims, Feb. 10, 4 p.m.

Robert Sims, Gold Medal winner of the American Traditions Competition, has been hailed by critics for his rich tone, energetic performances, and convincing stage presence. Mr. Sims, lyric baritone, has been highly praised for his moving interpretations of African-American spirituals and has given numerous recitals of them throughout the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia.
Cyrus Chestnut, April 5, 8 p.m.

Virtuosic and playful, pianist Cyrus Chestnut’s hard swinging, soulful sounds have become a staple in the jazz community. Blending contemporary jazz, traditional jazz and gospel, plus the occasional seasonings of Latin and samba, Chestnut gives himself plenty of freedom to explore different emotions, while keeping his music in recognizable form.
