HAMPTON, Va. (February 27, 2020) – The Hampton University James T. George School of Business hosted Founder, President and Chairman, Cotter Cunningham, to share his experience working as an entrepreneur and business owner.
“The James T. George School of Business has a long track record of inviting some of the most successful businesses around the entire world to speak to our students. The success of this company should inspire students to Dream No Small Dreams when starting their own businesses,” said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey.
RetailMeNot is the world’s largest online coupon and deals marketplace with over 300 employees and offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and France.
Prior to RetailMeNot, Cotter was the COO of Bankrate Inc. for seven years and an executive with interactive agency VML and H&R Block.
“I shadowed a guy who owned a coupon company. I noticed how he didn’t work hard. I felt like I could work harder than him, so I started my own coupon company,” said Cunningham. “The cool thing about RetailMeNot is that it helps people save money and for me, I like that part of it. I felt like I was doing something for people.”

“Teaching entrepreneurial students the skills they need to start a business is the foundation of what we do at HU,” said Executive-In-Residence, Marisa Porto. “We also like to give them the chance to talk to high-level executives like Cotter. He shared real world experience of what it’s like to have an idea for a business, start a company and take it public. Having him on campus was a great opportunity for students to connect in person with a successful entrepreneur.”
“The seminar was very eye opening because it really made me think about the importance of being or becoming a CEO of a company and how much work and time they have to put in to make their business successful,” said Kayla Cole, 2nd year Interdisciplinary Studies Major.
