Descendant of Nat Turner Visits Hampton University for Panel Discussion on the Insurrection of Nat Turner

Hampton, VA – Students at Hampton University piled into the Dr. William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library to learn more about one of the greatest insurections in U.S. history led by Nat Turner as well as Hollywood's depiction of the insurrection in the film 'Birth of a Nation.'

The list of panelsit included Nat Turner's Descendant Bruce Turner, Museum Program Assistant of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, and Associate Professor of Film Studies and English at HU, Booker T. Mattison. 

Panelist answered questions regarding how much the film depicted the true history of the insurrection as well as Nat Turner's actions and his mental health. Students also focused their questions on the relationship between slave owners and their slaves.

The event was hosted by Library Director, Tina D. Rollins.
