02/21/2020 - #178
HAMPTON, Va. (February 21, 2020) –The Coast Guard Headquarters' National African American History Month event in Wash DC on Feb 19th featured a special guest speaker, Ms. Christy Coleman.  Ms. Coleman is the Executive Director of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and is a Hampton University graduate.  She gave a fascinating presentation titled, "African Americans and the Vote - A Historical Perspective."

Of the hundreds in attendance, she had three Coast Guard officers in the audience who are also Hampton grads and we seized the opportunity to take a photo with her. From left to right: LTJG Myles Durr (2015), CDR Keedah Ray (1999), Ms. Christy Coleman, and CAPT Michael E. Platt (1991).

All three officers joined the Coast Guard through the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) scholarship program while attending Hampton.

ENS Curtis Banks (Class of 2015) was also in the audience and is a Hampton grad as well.
