HAMPTON, Virginia (Sept. 25) -- Matthew Winkler, Bloomberg News founder, editor-in-chief emeritus and author of "The Bloomberg Way," will be the special guest at a moderated Q&A today, Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Hampton University's Scripps Auditorium.
Winkler, editor-in-chief until 2015, was instrumental in the growth of Bloomberg LP to a multibillion-dollar company.
His visit is the latest collaboration between Bloomberg and Hampton University since JAC 451 Business Journalism was added to HU's Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications curriculum in 2017.
Hampton Assistant Professor Butch Maier -- a 25-year journalist for The Boston Globe and several other major publications -- started teaching the course last fall. Maier uses Winkler's "The Bloomberg Way: A Guide for Reporters and Editors" as the textbook.
Six HU business journalism students -- including Aviel Brown, today's moderator -- were selected for a Bloomberg journalism workshop in January in Washington, D.C.
Another of those students -- Brianna Jackson, a 2018 Hampton University graduate -- completed a prestigious Bloomberg News internship in New York City this past summer.
Bloomberg recruiters and editors visit Hampton four to five times each semester. This is Winkler's first appearance at HU since the new course was added.
The Scripps Auditorium is located inside Hampton University's Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at 546 E. Queen Street in Hampton.
