On June 12, 1903, seven lovely roses founded the music sorority Sigma Alpha Iota. The founders were all music majors at the University of Michigan School of Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Mu Gamma Chapter was chartered at Hampton University May 1, 2011 with 16 founding members. Not all of the 16 members were music majors but they all shared a sincere interest in music.

Tanice Francis, President of Mu Gamma, makes sure that all of their social activities are connected with helping the community and sticking along with their mission statement. Their mission is to encourage, nurture, and support the art of music.

Some of their projects entail focusing on supporting the music department, donate to the Hampton community's Women's in Transition an work with Girl's Inc. They also work closely with the Down in Gross Cultural Arts Center helping out with concerts, children's centered events such as Halloween festival, Christmas programs, music classes, glee clubs, and individual musicians. The ladies of Mu Gamma along with their brother fraternity Phi Mu Alpa mentor 15 students.

On Dec. 1, the Mu Gamma chapter worked along with the Girl's Inc. annual gala assisting their children's choir.

"The chapter's goals are to bring organization on campus and they want the students of Hampton University to have a new cultural experience. One cultural experience that they aim to do is bring students to the opera" says Tanice Francis.
Through the love of music these girls shine a light on Hampton's campus through nurturing the minds of the HU students.
